Basic baking tools and equipment

Basic baking tools and equipment -10 essential investments for bakers

All the basic baking tools and equipment a baker needs

Good day, folks!

Why am I writing this article about the basic baking tools and equipment for bakers, you ask?

I know there must be someone like me. When I start a hobby or take part in a new activity, whether it is baking or taking a sport, I spend money on the tools and equipment and I really enjoy it!

Actually, when I was young I have spent so much that my mum restricts and does not allow me to have a new hobby.  Aww, that’s not very nice. Is it? At least for me, collecting the tools and equipment is part of the joy of practising a particular hobby (sorry, mum).

You can pretty much guess what happened when I started to bake (oops).

My kitchen is stocked with lots and lots and lots of baking tools, of which some of them I did not have a chance to use even after a few years. That’s a great shame. But, you don’t have to go through this.

Here I have included a list to show you the very basic baking tools and equipment you are going to need if you are considering to start baking! 🙂

Basic baking tools and equipment for beginners

1. Scale

What I recommend: Salter digital kitchen weighing scale

Price: £14.99

It might be obvious but the very first thing you are going to need is a food scale. Baking is a combination of art and science. Precision is key and failure to measure can lead to baking disasters.

My best advice when it comes to baking is: Don’t go with your gut instinct! Ending up with a tray of sad-looking cookies is the last thing you want.

I always love a digital scale as it allows you to weigh right down to a few grams. For example, the accuracy of this Salter weighing scale is at its finest.

It is made from sensors with the highest precision and the LCD display is straightforward and easy to read. This scale allows you to measure each gram accurately up to 5kg.

If you are more comfortable with pounds, no worries at all. You may also measure each ounce up to 11 lbs with this scale.

Baking with the precisely measured ingredients, you don’t have to worry that you are going to fail this batch.

This model allows you to measure everything easily in a bowl. Just press the ZERO button to start from 0 and keep adding your ingredients.

Whenever necessary, hit the UNIT button to convert your measurement from metric grams to imperial pounds or ounces, or vice versa. And, keep adding your ingredients!

This scale is so versatile that you can even measure out your liquids such as milk and oil in millilitres or fluid ounce. Yeah, you heard it right. You don’t even need the measuring cup for your milk.

Plus, it’s got a simplistic and yet gorgeous design. As it can be used so often (I use it when I am cooking and meal prepping too), you wouldn’t want a cheap-looking weird scale to stay on your countertop forever.

Finished with hygienic stainless steel, you will find cleaning it is a breeze. Simply wipe clean if you find any fats or dust on it! Just make sure that you don’t immerse it in the water.

I promise you. This scale’s definitely going to be one of the worthiest investment in your kitchen.

What are others saying?

The reliability and functionally of this model has definitely proved itself in this industry. Calling itself the Bestselling Digital Kitchen Scales in the UK, no one has raised his objection.

More than 2500 verified buyers on the Amazon has left it an overall rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars and the comment section is filled with overwhelmingly positive responses.

2. Mixer

What I recommend: Dualit 89300 Hand Mixer

Price: £58.96

If we are talking about the basic baking tools and equipment, a trusty mixer is an absolute must-have item when it comes to baking. Imagine the amount of extra effort and time you are going to put in if you are making a cake without the mixer.

Aww, come on! You are going to need one for sure.

Many experienced bakers would get themselves a stand mixer but a hand mixer is absolutely perfect for beginners. I mean, you can always get yourself a stand mixer at some point, but a good hand mixer will deliver the same result as well.

Actually, I prefer using my hand mixer rather than the big guys when I am just whipping an egg or 100ml of whipping cream. It’s just a lot more manageable.

As for hand mixers, this Dualit 89303 hand mixer is what I highly recommend.

It has a heavy duty 400W motor to power your everyday baking activities and comes with four-speed settings. Turn to the low speed when adding the ingredients to avoid spillage and gradually speed up to mix or whisk ingredients to perfection.

Three set of accessories – the flat beaters, dough hooks and balloon whisk are also included to aid your baking. You don’t have to worry that you need to purchase any extras as these accessories are perfectly enough for every baker. By the way, there are also left and right symbols on the beater to instruct you.

The handle is comfy to be held and there is even a beater ejector button on the top of the handle! You will find this button extremely handy if you have ever encountered with any mixer that doesn’t have one.

Think about the meringue spewed on your carpet when you are trying to remove the whisk from the mixer. That’s a nightmare.

What’s better? The cord of this model is retractable and there is also an internal plug storage to keep everything neat and tangle free. You don’t have to spend ages tidying it when you are taking it out of your cupboard.

The attachments are dishwasher safe, so you may just pop it into the dishwater if you decide that you can’t be bothered to deal with the mess today.

Plus, it has got a sleek and attractive design. Other than chrome, it is available in canvas white and metallic red colour too. You can now prepare to be wowed when you are getting it out of the delivery box!

What are others saying?

The bakers love the fact that this model is easy to use and clean. Most importantly, this Dualit hand mixer performed very well at whisking and mixing the ingredients.

The only little drawback found is that some have commented that this Dualit hand mixer starts to labour when it is kneading dough – the motor sounds like it is struggling. Though, the mixture is still well-combined.

3. Sieve

What I recommend: KitchenCraft Large Stainless Steel Sieve, 20 cm (8”)

You will never get a good cake or cookies if you ignore the step of sieving the flour, sugar or cocoa powder. Not only getting rid of the nuggets, sifting also helps in aerating the ingredients.

Okay, I am going to make a little confession here. I actually tried to skip the sifting step once or twice and guess what happened? I nearly cried when I saw lumps floating around my batter. And, the lumps just won’t get cooked at the end of the day.

I consider that one of the most awful moments in my life. You wouldn’t want it to happen to your batter.

As for sieves, I personally prefer the old fashioned large sieve rather than a hand-operated sifter as I find it easier to be cleaned. For instance, this KitchenCraft sieve is a good one to go with.

It is made from robust stainless steel and designed for hassle-free baking. The beautiful mesh sieves perfectly. You don’t have to worry that there will be any lumps in your sifted flour.

One of the most important factor when choosing a sieve is to make sure that the size of sieve you are choosing is compatible with your mixing bowl.

You need to make sure that the sieve a bit smaller than your bowl, so the built-in rests are able to keep the sieve in place over your bowl. If it sits perfectly, you should be able to sieve the flour through by gently tapping the sieve against your mixing bowl.

This model also has a looped handle to allow you to hand it up for storage. It is easy to clean and comes with a 12-month guarantee. Yay, we love guarantees!

Not only for flour sieving, this model is also great for washing and straining. You can be convinced that this sieve is a real all-rounder.

What are others saying?

The verified buyers on the Amazon are happy with both the price and quality of this KitchenCraft sieve and have left an overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars rating for it.

This well-made and sturdy sieve works well with flour, noodles and rice but some commented that it starts to rust after putting it into the dishwasher, even that the product description states that it is dishwasher safe.

The buyers suggest to wash by hand rather than using the dishwasher.

4. Mixing bowls

What I recommend: Pyrex Bowl Set, 0.5L/1.0L /2.0L, 3 Piece

Price: £12

Okay, let’s talk about mixing bowls.

There are tons of them in different sizes and ranging in materials from glass to copper available on the market but don’t worry, you won’t need all of them.

As you will find many recipes that need more than one mixing bowl, for example, one for the dry ingredients and one for the wet ingredients, it is good to have two or three pieces that are in decent size.

I don’t recommend you to purchase bowls made from plastic because the mixing bowls are undoubtedly one of the most frequently used tools in baking and it is worth investing a bit more in it.

You wouldn’t be happy looking at the scratches and stains on your plastic-made mixing bowl.

For example, this Pyrex bowl set includes three glass bowls that vary in size – 0.5L, 1L and 2L. These are the most used size in the baking world and will support you perfectly in the baking process.

Pyrex has a long-term fantastic brand reputation – it is a quality insurer and you don’t have to worry that you are buying a crappy product that ends up in the bin at the end of the day.

These bowls are durable and have an extra resistant to thermal shock and are able to cope with heat up to 300°C. You can bake comfortably as long as you are within this safe limit.

The Pyrex glass bowls are stain and scratch resistant and easy to clean. You can even pour a kettle of boiling water on them to make sure they are free of grease.  By the way, they are dishwasher safe, too. You may just leave the tiring cleaning job to your machine after your baking session.

This ovenware set is clearly not limited to be used in the oven. They are safe to be used in microwave, fridge and freezer too. Just make sure that you are not immersing them in the cold water immediately after removing them from the oven.

Pyrex has obviously shown their confidence in their products. This bowl set comes with a generous 10-year guarantee. This is a promise to you that you are going to be a happy baker with these mixing bowls.

What are others saying?

The unique quality and durability of these Pyrex bowls have won themselves the buyers’ hearts. 95% of verified buyers have left a four or five-star review on it and the overall rating of this glass bowl set is 4.7 out of 5 stars.

Some even commented that this is the first time they are replacing their bowl set after the last set has served for more than twenty years.

No critical reviews have been found.

5. Whisks and spatulas

What I recommend: OXO Good Grips Balloon Whisk, 11-inchOXO Good Grips Silicone Medium Spatula – White

Price: £8.49; £6.30

How can we miss out the whisks and spatulas when we are discussing the basic baking tools and equipment (I have an army of them)? At the end of your baking session, you will be amazed by the versatility of this two tools.

From stirring, mixing, spreading frosting, scrapping the remaining icing on the sides of your bowls, they’ve got it covered. I even use my spatula for stirring when I am cooking my mushroom soup.

If you can’t justify buying a hand mixer just for whipping an egg or a small quantity of cream, the balloon whisk is your best bet. You can get the job perfectly done as well by using the balloon whisk. I also use it when mixing my dry ingredients and when folding in the flour.

This 11-inch OXO balloon whisk is of high quality and made from 10 well polished stainless steel wires that make 20 loops.

This model is designed to be robust and is able to handle a vigorous whipping and aerating. You may whip comfortably in the knowledge that this whisk is not going to break.

This OXO balloon whisk features a fat, teardrop-shaped handle. This is to provide you with the maximum comfort, especially as you are performing a repetitive movement.

The handle also includes a non-slip element at the handle – another feature that allows whipping at ease. You don’t have to worry that it is going to slip even that your hands are wet.

This model is dishwasher safe too. We are going to let our machines to do all the heavy jobs!

As for spatula, the model I recommend is this OXO Good Grip Silicone Spatula.

Similarly, OXO has included a soft, comfy and non-slip handle in this spatula. You are going to be a happy baker all day long!

This spatula is covered in silicone at the head and neck. You might notice this is an awesome feature that ensures that you are not going the scratch your non-stick pan or any coated bakeware.

The silicone-made head is flexible, making it ideal for scrapping your batter or chocolate sauce. Your kid might blame you for not leaving enough chocolate sauce for him to have a good lick on the bowl.

It is heat resistant up to 315°C. You don’t have to worry that it is going to discolour, melt or become twisted when it is used in a heated liquid.

What are others saying?

The buyers obviously love these well-made basic kitchen tools and the OXO whisk is perhaps the highest rated whisk on the Amazon (4.8 out of 5 stars from more than 100 reviews).

Some commented that this model has more ‘whisk wire’ that makes whipping easier and they are happy to find that it is large enough to mix ingredients or whip cream and yet small enough to fit into a drawer.

On the other hand, the reasons for the verified buyers to recommend the OXO silicone spatula include the fact that it is a great alternative to wooden spoons or metal kitchen utensils. This spatula scraps the sides of bowl neatly and is easy to clean.

6. Measuring cups and spoons

What I recommend: Joyorun copper measuring spoonsJoyorun copper stainless steel measuring cups

Price: £12.99; £13.99

I am sure that you have seen some recipes that are written in imperial measurements such as cups and spoons.

I personally prefer the metric measures but it is also good to have a set of measuring spoons and cups to avoid the tricky conversions.

Actually, for some ingredients such as vanilla extract or baking soda or buttermilk, you may find them measured in cups and spoons all the time. That’s why you will need a nice decent set of measuring cups and spoons.

This Joyorun copper stainless steel measuring cups and spoons sets are essential for all well-equipped kitchens.

The reason I am recommending these sets made from metal rather than the plastic-made ones is that you don’t have to worry that they might discolour or melt when you are using them.

You might not think the material is not that important but yes, I had a plastic set and the measurements printed on it disappeared when I used it to measure alcohol (ugh).

These stainless steel sets are made to be durable and heavy-duty. They will not rust and serve as a more health-conscious choice, compared with the plastic versions. You may safely use them to accurately measure any dry or wet ingredients.

These measuring cups and spoons are totally food safe and have engraved measurements on them for easy use. Don’t worry, you are well-taken care – these are all the measurements you will need when you bake.

Simply dip them into your container of sugar or flour, scoop out your heap of ingredient and gently level out the top of your measure. The cups even have a lip on each side for liquid measurements.

It is also not hard to notice that these sets are attractive and gorgeous. Each of them is crafted with care and the polish on both sides have given them a luxurious look, making them stand out from other similar products on the market.

You can rest assured that they will fit in with any kitchen decorating style.

From the storage perspective, they nest well and only take up minimal space in your drawer. Otherwise, you may also hand them somewhere in your kitchen thanks to the built-in ring.

What are others saying?

These Joyorun measuring sets have a 4.5 out of 5 stars. They are highly recommended by the buyers due to their supreme quality, perfect measuring accuracy and stunning appearance.

Some buyers specifically stated the lip of each side of the cups is particularly useful for liquid measurements.

The only minor drawback spotted is that these models are not dishwasher safe.

7. Measuring jugs

What I recommend: Pyrex Glass Measuring Jug, 1L

Price: £5

Whether or not everyone calls the measuring jug an essential item when discussing the basic baking tools and equipment, it is indeed another useful tool when you need to measure liquids such as milk or oil in millilitres or pint. One perfect example would be the secret ingredient in my chocolate cake recipe.

By the way, if you haven’t got a chance to have a look on my super decadent chocolate recipe, you may click here to proceed!

I also use my measuring jug when I need to pour my batter into small baking tins. For example, when I am making my cupcakes. This is going to help you to avoid a messy work surface and allows the pouring job to be done within a minute.

You can probably have a bold guess that I am a great Pyrex fan because what I am recommending you now is another Pyrex product – the Pyrex 1L measuring jug.

I find this is the most used size in my kitchen and I am sorry if I repeat again and again how great the Pyrex products are.

The glass-made measuring jug is transparent, so you can just add your ingredient confidently into it while having a constant check on the measurement markings.

If you need to read a more detailed review on Pyrex, you may see number 4, where I explained about the Pyrex mixing bowl.

Here I am just going to summarise its features.

Pyrex products are made from the Borosilicate Glass that carries an extra resistance to thermal shock and are able to endure a high temperature up to 300°C, which is higher than the most conventional oven.

They are resistant to stains and scratches. It is easy to clean and you don’t have to worry that any flavour with be retained on it.

Not only to be used in the oven, you can also pop it into your microwave, fridge, freezer and dishwasher.

This measuring jug features an easy grip handle and its lip is properly shaped to make sure that your content is poured into your container or baking tin, rather than over your countertop.

Similarly, this Pyrex measuring jug comes with a 10-year guarantee against manufacturer defects.

What are others saying?

It’s never hard to fall in love with a well-made and long lasting product. This measuring jug earned a rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars from more than 550 verified buyers.

Other than its high quality, the buyers love the clear markings on the jug and said that the markings are perfect even after they placed it in the dishwasher.

The opening is huge and allows the buyer to blend their smoothies directly into the jug.

8. Baking tins

What I recommend: Le Creuset Toughened Non-Stick Bakeware Springform Round Cake Tin – 24 cm

Price: £21.60

Le-Creuset-toughened-non-stick-springform-round-cake-tinAdmit it. It’s never not exciting to shop for baking tins! I know you think the same.

It’s always a pleasure standing in front of the oven and watch your cake being cooked in the baking tin. I like to imagine different baking tins as my cake’s dressing style (okay, I’m a weirdo).

Today I am baking a round cake. Umm, tomorrow I would love to have a square cake.

And, there are just so many tins in different shapes and sizes and materials available on the market. We always need one more baking pan.

In my ‘Essential baking pans or bakers’ post, I have listed eight types of pans every baker needs to stock in their kitchen. I hope you have had a read on that (winked).

But, if not, here I am going to tell you the most basic and essential tin you need.

The 9-inch springform cake tin is what I find most useful and versatile since day one of my baking life.

It can handle pretty much every classic cake you can name. And, this kind of springform baking tin is particularly handy when you are making a cheesecake or other cakes that have a delicate topping or a base that make the cake unable to be removed by inverting it.

The spring-loaded clip on the side allows you to remove the outer ring from the base securely without damaging your cake – a feature that every beginner baker will fall in love.

The springform cake tin I am specifically recommending here is from Le Creuset, which is a French company well-known for producing premium cookware.

For example, the cake tin I recommend here is made to be strong and has a rigid and durable construction. You don’t have to worry that it is going to bend or twist when placed in a heated environment.

Both the inside and the outside have been coated with a PFOA-free non-stick coating. This means that this baking tin is non-stick and your baked goods will slide out without any difficulties.

This bakeware is able to deal with temperature up to 240°C. So, as long as you baking within this safe limit, there will be no issue bothering you.

You may use metal utensils with care on this baking tin but anything sharp edges such as knives should not be used.

The other feature worth highlighting is that Le Creuset has included a lifetime guarantee along with the purchase of this baking tin. This guarantee will cover all the workman faulty.

However, one con on this product is that it is not dishwasher safe and not suitable for microwave ovens.

What are others saying?

The rating of this Le Creuset baking tin on the Amazon is 4.4 out of 5 stars.

86% of the verified buyers are satisfied with its exceptional quality and non-stick feature but the rest have decided to leave a negative review on it.  These disappointed buyers commented that the non-stick effect of this baking tin starts to deteriorate after a few months of use.

9. Baking parchment

What I recommend: Bake-O-Glide STD0330 Non-Stick Reusable Cooking/Baking Liner, Brown

Price: £9.07

Don’t confuse baking parchment with greaseproof paper!

Baking parchment, also known as the silicone paper, is treated with silicone. It is non-stick, moisture-proof and great in dealing with high temperature, which makes it ideal for lining baking trays and cake tins.

On the other hand, a greaseproof paper is fat-resistant and is good for wrapping greasy food but it is not non-stick or heat-resistant. If you use it for lining the cake tins, it will end up sticking to your cake.

Yep, be careful.

I used to line my baking trays with disposable baking parchment because I am not willing to deal with the cleaning job later. But, guess what? This is until I found this Bake-O-Glide non-stick reusable baking liner!

It’s so easy to clean that you just have to roll it loosely and pop it into your dishwater after your baked goods are done.

It is made from woven fabric and 100% coated in PTFE. This means that it is super non-stick and you can comfortably use it in your fat-free cooking.

This baking liner is not limited to be used in baking, you can also safely use it when you are doing any grilling, frying or roasting.

This product is heat-proof up to 260°C, which is more than enough for any daily use. You don’t have to worry that it is going to melt or warp. This liner is safe to be used in any electric, gas or solid fuel oven and cookers.

This baking liner can be used more than a thousand times – an exceptional feature that allows you to bake in a more cost-effective and environmental-friendly way.

The dimension of it is 100 x 33 cm. This pack should be big enough for you to line at least two of your baking trays. You may store it rolled or flat in your drawer.

What are others saying?

This Bake-O-Glide non-stick baking liner has received a high rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars from more than 140 reviews contributed by the verified buyers on the Amazon.

The review section is flooded with overwhelmingly positive comments. For example, some of the buyers reflected that this baking liner is great and thick enough to prevent the seeping of oil through it, making the cleaning of the baking sheet quick and easy.

The colour of the baking liner darkens over time but never lose their non-stick property. This feature has brought new life to baking trays that are no longer non-stick.

10. Oven thermometer

What I recommend: Salter Kitchen Oven Thermometer, Stainless Steel

Price: £9.99

The last thing we include in the collection of ‘basic baking tools and equipment for beginners’ is this oven thermometer.

Call me extra for having the oven thermometer, but the reality is this little piece of inexpensive gadget is the most useful helper to ensure the quality of your baked goods.

Unless your oven is regularly calibrated or new, the risk of your oven cheating on you should not be neglected. I know I sound like a serious finance person here (sorry, actually not sorry).

You might turn it to a 200°C but you never know the actual temperature inside. It could be 20°C higher or lower, or even 70 or 80°C in difference. Yes, I’m not trying to scare you here.

And, you probably know the effect of having an incorrect temperature on your masterpiece. Ending up with a tray of burnt cupcakes is going to make you cry.

That’s why I always pop my little oven thermometer next to my baking tin whenever I decide to bake.

By the way, the perfect spot for you to place your baking tin is at the exact centre in the oven. I call it the magical spot because that’s where your cake will be cooked evenly from all direction. You can rest assured that your cake is not going to be pointy at one end while the other end remains uncooked.

This Salter oven thermometer I recommend here is made from stainless steel with glass lens. It’s got a large and bold display so you can easily read it and keep control from the outside of your oven.

You may sit, stand or hang it on the shelf and the viewing angle is adjustable. This feature makes sure that you are able to use it at ease and clearly read the recorded temperature.

This model contained a bi-metal thermometer sensor. Warning: nerdy explanation ahead.

Basically, a bi-thermometer is made up of two different metals bonded together. It works by utilising the difference in the amount of these two metals expand when heated. This will eventually lead the pointer moving up or down the scale.

Anyway, this means that you will not need any battery in order to make this oven thermometer work. It works anytime when it is heated and the temperature range for it to work safely is 50 to 300°C.

One last point I need to mention is that this thermometer comes with a 15-year guarantee. You can rest assured that this is going to be a reliable product.

Trust me, once you have used this, you will wonder how did you survive the days before.

What are others saying?

This Salter oven thermometer is rated at 4.3 out of 5 stars by the verified buyers.

They reflected that this gadget is not only exceptionally well-made and reliable but also accurate and easy to read. They also reminded other people who are viewing this product that the accuracy in temperature is essential not only for cooking but also for food safety.

  • Furkan

I just moved to a different city and I really need to cook myself and I really want to cook good cakes for my guests. Other than cleaning are there any differences between old fashioned sieve and a hand-operated sifter?

    • Crystal

Yeah, there are! The hand sifter holds a lot less flour than the normal sieve and some say it’s also easier for a person with mobility issue (e.g arthritis) to use the normal sieve as you simply shake and tap rather than constantly working on the hand crank.

    • Crystal

You can check out the link I attached here:) It’s a stainless steel balloon whisk and it’s silicone tipped. It is sturdy and won’t scractch your pan at the same time! Hope it helps.

  • DAWN

This is great for someone who doesn’t bake (me) but has a daughter who absolutely loves it! I learned a little something! Thank you for the info!

  • Amy

This is a really informative post. I love baking and also love buying the equipment, but don’t have lots of money to spend on unnecessary equipment. I have most of the things on your list but never really understood the need for an oven thermometer, I assume the indicator on my oven is accurate but maybe not! Have you noticed a big difference since using this?

    • Crystal

      Yes, definitely!

Before I got myself an oven thermometer, I was always confused by the difference in time between the recipe states and the actual time my cake takes. Turns out my oven is just a lot lower in the actual temperature!

Absolutely recommend the oven thermometer! I also use it when I am roasting my chicken!

  • CNGoodwin

I love to bake, and my collection is very large. You have listed some very handy items in this article. There are so many things one can get for baking, all boils down to what you want to bake. Thanks for sharing

  • Matiss

    Hey, Crystal!

I am so glad I came across your article.

My wife enjoys baking very much and I love when she bakes cakes and muffins for me. I know it would be easier for her to bake if we had at least a few of these tools and equipment our kitchen lacks.

Actually our 3rd Wedding anniversary is next month and these are great ideas for a present for her.

Is there also a non-stick silicone pan with removable sides you have used and found doing its job great?

    Thanks again!
    Have a Great One!

    • Crystal

      Hi Matiss,

Thanks for your lovely comment and happy anniversary in advance!

Unfortunately, I haven’t seen any silicone tin that comes with a removable side on the market. They come in one piece, and by pushing it from the bottom, you remove your cake from the mould.

There has been a fashion in silicone mould but I still prefer using those heavy-duty metal tins. I feel that they are sturdier and longer-lasting!

    • Crystal

      Thank you!

I just thought it will be great to share something I know! 🙂

And, sure, if you ever need any recipes or have anything to ask, you’re very welcome to come to my blog!:)

  • Mary

    Hi Crystal,
I’m totally with you on the digital scale point. My husband bakes bread and he needs a precise scale, as his old one is falling apart. Maybe I can get him a new one for his upcoming birthday.
I’m the cakes and muffins master in the house. I love nestling measuring cups and spoons. These copper sets are beautiful.
What do you think about silicone baking forms, like cake pans and muffin pans? I use some red ones from Amazon for muffins, as I find them easier to clean.

    • Crystal

      Hi Mary,

I can tell you are the most lovely wife on earth! I would definitely love a scale as my birthday gift! If you want to know more about the best kitchen scales on the market, you can take a look on my best kitchen scales guide.

As for the silicone baking forms, I’m not really a fan of them. I use them as moulds when I make chocolate but I still prefer the good, old-fashioned metal baking pans when I need to bake – I feel that they are a lot more sturdy. But, yeah, the silicone ones do have their advantages. Easy to clean and definitely super easy to remove your baked goods from it!

  • Christina

Great post about these essentials. All too often when getting gifts for someone whether they be a new college grad starting off or wedding shower, we forget about some of the essential things like an oven thermometer. But these little things can really make a difference in the quality of baking! Thanks for the helpful info!

    • Crystal

Haha, I have never thought of that! Giving an oven thermometer to a freshman in university! I wish that I received that! It’s not just for baking – I’m sure that I have roasted more than a hundred chicken throughout my uni life. That would be great if I had the oven thermometer since the start day of my uni!

  • Michelle

    Hello Crystal,
Great article and lots of tips and information. I am a baker too and you hit the nail right on the head about the baking basics…I think you got it covered! I will be visiting your site more for my baking needs. All the best.

    • Crystal

      Thank you, Vicki!

I just thought it would be great to share some of my experience with others! At least I wish I read more about these guides when I was starting out! 🙂

    • Crystal

      Yeah, definitely!

I can’t imagine going back to the life where I haven’t got one and actually thought that it was unnecessary! I will definitely advise you to get a hand mixer!

If you need some tips on choosing the best hand mixer and would love to learn about more great hand mixer models, here’s another article I published before. Hope this helps!

Haha wow, this is a very on-point article!
I have 6 years in the food and beverage industry as a cook and have had my fair share of baking; full sheet pan at a time!
You definitely need parchment so you don’t burn the bottom of so many different baked goods!
You need a whisk for quick emulsification and incorporating air unless you want to get a blender for emulsifying certain products or could even use a stand mixer with a whisk attachment for certain higher quantity recipes!!
I can’t tell you how many times I had to get a new pair of measuring cups because someone lost or misplaced the previous ones!
Rubber spatulas are so handy! From getting the last bit of product from the container; to folding delicate baking mixtures so they don’t get overworked!

This is a very helpful and informative article!
Thank you for sharing this article!

I look forward to more of your future quality content!

Aww, thanks for sharing your thoughts here! I’m so happy to meet another professional here in my blog! I’m sure we are becoming friends!

And yes, you are so right! Every time I buy a new set of measuring cups or spoons, the first thing I check is whether there is a small ring at the top that helps to keep the whole set nicely together so I wouldn’t lose any of it.

Also, a rubber spatula is a must! They scrape everything in your bowl so clean that you don’t even need to wash your bowl (okay, joking). One thing you should notice, though, is that your spatula should be flexible enough to the level that it allows you to scrape tidily!

Anyway, once again thank you for leaving me such a nice comment! I really appreciate it! 🙂
